German dance piece enthrals audience in city school

The choreographic spectacle Spiel im Spiel (Game within the Game), performed by German artists at Christ Nagar Higher Secondary School in the city on Friday, enthralled the audience for whom it turned out to be an unforgettable experience.

The troupe was brought to the city by Goethe-Institut, Germany’s cultural institute promoting language and cultural exchange worldwide.

The dance piece by Ceren Oran & Moving Borders, for everyone aged three and over, was kaleidoscopically illuminating the childlike virtue of easily facing difficulties and challenges.

Now on a world tour, “Game into Game” is a virtuous, playful, humorous, and touching dance piece for children and their families.

The “Game into Game” involves three dancers to explore different rules, spaces, and choices of each other’s world of games. They tear down one to build and explore another one.

Munich-based Ms Oran makes charming productions for children.

As they performed, nothing looked impossible: the floor was made of lava, objects flew through the air, and everyday items took on a whole new meaning. The stool became a raft, a bridge, a house, a tower. It stood on its head, lay on its side, and stood on its feet.

From an almost infinite selection of possibilities, new worlds with their own rules emerged playfully and were repeatedly changed, expanded, and discarded, with the audience watching in bated breath.

Three performers, one technician and a choreographer, were part of the five-member crew.

Ms Oran is the artistic director and choreographer, while Jin Lee, Jihun Choi, and Mate Ásboth handle the dance and choreography and join Sofia Casprini and Roni Sagi as dancers on the stage.

Fabulous professional dancers dig deep into human emotions and behaviour, packing them into the charming momentary nature of brief encounters that arise by chance or as a result of playful impulses.

The dance-drama develops as one game leads to another. It depicts strong emotions and bonding. Willful people approach one another, transform themselves, help or argue, explore the world together, and occasionally outsmart one another.

The 40-minute co-production with COMEDIA Theatre Cologne, HochX Theatre, and Live Art Munich premiered last year at the HochX Theater and Live Art Munich.

The production has the support of the Cultural Department of the City of Munich and the Bavarian State Association for Contemporary Dance (BLZT) with funds from the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts.
