By The Union Budget 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, introduces several key initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s tourism industry. These measures include visa waivers for select foreign tourist groups, the development of major tourist destinations, financial support for homestays, and the promotion of medical tourism. With a focus on infrastructure enhancement and increased accessibility, the government aims to position India as a leading global travel and healthcare destination.
Visa Waivers to Attract Foreign Tourists
To encourage international tourism, the government will introduce visa waivers for select foreign tourist groups, simplifying entry processes and making India more accessible. This initiative is expected to boost tourism revenues by leveraging the country’s diverse cultural, historical, and natural attractions.
Development of 50 Major Tourist Destinations
In collaboration with state governments, the Center will develop 50 prominent tourist sites to world-class standards. Special emphasis will be placed on locations linked to the life and teachings of Lord Buddha, enhancing India’s spiritual and heritage tourism offerings. Improved infrastructure, amenities, and accessibility will make these destinations more appealing to both domestic and international visitors.
Financial Support for Homestays through Mudra Loans
Recognizing the growing demand for authentic local experiences, the government will extend Mudra loans to homestay businesses. This financial support will help small accommodation providers upgrade their facilities, improving hospitality services and promoting entrepreneurship in both rural and urban areas.
Boost to Medical Tourism through ‘Heal in India’ Initiative
India is already a preferred destination for affordable, high-quality medical care. Under the ‘Heal in India’ initiative, the government will collaborate with private sector players to further promote medical tourism. Simplified visa procedures and enhanced medical infrastructure will strengthen India’s reputation as a global hub for healthcare and wellness tourism.
Expansion of Regional Connectivity under UDAN Scheme
As part of nationwide airport modernization efforts, the government is expanding the UDAN scheme to enhance regional air connectivity:
- 1.5 crore travelers have already benefited across 88 airports
- 619 routes are currently operational
- Expansion to 120 new destinations will improve connectivity and boost regional tourism and economic growth
- Strengthening Tourism Infrastructure for Economic Growth
- Development of 22 key destinations in collaboration with state governments
- Expansion of MUDRA loans to support local homestay businesses
- Strengthening regional tourism networks to stimulate economic growth
